In August 2026, the Chicago metro area set an all-time record for the number of jobs on payrolls in the month of August. Its unemployment rate went up anyway, rising 1.1 percentage points to 5.6%, making Chicago the only Illinois metro area where the rate climbed that month. That single pair of facts should shape how you run a Chicago job search this fall, according to Illinois Department of Employment Security figures released September 25.

Both things being true at once is the single most useful fact to hold on to. Record employment means openings exist. A rising jobless rate means more people are chasing them. The practical result is a crowded pipeline for every posting, not an empty one.

That changes what you should do about it. This guide covers what the Chicago numbers actually say, which parts of the metro economy are carrying the hiring, and how to point your resume at them.

What the Chicago job search looks like in 2026

Start with scale. The Chicago area had about 4.8 million nonfarm payroll jobs as of July 2026, per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Chicago Area Economic Summary updated September 2, 2026. That is one of the largest single labor markets in the country, and it has been posting record job counts month after month.

Now the other side. In its July 2026 metro release, IDES reported the Chicago-Naperville-Schaumburg Metro Division at a 5.2% unemployment rate, up 0.4 percentage point from a year earlier, with total nonfarm jobs up 10,500 over the year, a gain of 0.3%.

Read those together and the picture is clear. The market is enormous and still growing, but it is growing slowly while the pool of people looking has grown faster. You are not searching in a market that has stopped hiring. You are searching in a market where your application lands in a bigger stack.

Where Chicago employers are actually hiring

Chicago’s job base is not evenly distributed, and knowing the shape of it tells you where to aim. The BLS summary breaks the metro down by supersector, and three of them dominate.

Trade, transportation and utilities

This is the largest supersector in the metro at roughly 933,400 jobs as of July 2026. Chicago is a national rail, freight and air hub, and that infrastructure supports logistics coordinators, supply chain analysts, warehouse and distribution management, procurement, and a deep bench of operations roles. IDES has repeatedly flagged transportation, warehousing and utilities as one of the sectors gaining ground across Illinois metros.

Professional and business services

At about 817,900 jobs, this is the consulting, accounting, legal, marketing, staffing and corporate services layer of the Loop and the collar suburbs. It is also the sector where resume screening tends to be most automated, because the application volume per posting is highest.

Education and health services

About 811,600 jobs, and consistently the most reliable source of year-over-year growth. IDES named private education and health services as the sector gaining in the largest number of Illinois metro areas in its recent releases. Hospital systems, university networks and outpatient providers across Cook, DuPage and Lake counties hire steadily even when other sectors pause.

Government adds roughly 549,000 jobs and manufacturing about 410,400. If your experience touches any of these five areas, the openings are there. The question is whether your resume reads like it belongs to that sector.

Why a bigger market can still feel harder

When unemployment rises while job counts stay at records, competition concentrates. More qualified people apply to each posting, and employers respond by filtering harder and earlier. That filtering usually happens before a human reads anything.

Two things follow from that. First, a generic resume that could be sent to any employer in any city gets screened out faster in a high-volume market than in a thin one. Second, the difference between a near miss and an interview is often a handful of specific terms the screening step was looking for. We covered how that screening works in more detail in our guide to AI resume screening in 2026.

None of this means the search is hopeless. It means a Chicago job search rewards precision more than volume right now, and that a targeted application beats five generic ones.

How to target your resume for Chicago employers

Make the location unambiguous

Put a Chicago-area location line at the top of the resume. Many employers filter by metro, and a missing or vague location is an easy reason to pass. If you are relocating, say so plainly rather than leaving a recruiter to guess.

Use the sector’s own vocabulary

A logistics manager and a professional services manager may do similar work, but they do not describe it the same way. Pull the language from three or four real postings in your target sector and make sure the true parts of your experience are described in those words on your resume.

Quantify in terms that sector cares about

Health systems care about patient volume, throughput and compliance. Logistics employers care about on-time rates, cost per unit and headcount managed. Professional services care about revenue, retention and project scope. Pick the measures your sector reads first.

Here is a short checklist to run before you send the next application:

  1. Your location line names the Chicago metro area, not just a state.
  2. Your job titles match the titles used in the postings you are targeting.
  3. Your top third of page one speaks to the sector, not to your whole career history.
  4. At least three bullets carry a number that matters in that sector.
  5. Your file is a standard document format with no text buried in headers, tables or graphics.
  6. Your LinkedIn headline and your resume summary tell the same story.

Set a timeline you can actually sustain

A crowded market takes longer to work through, and planning for that keeps you from quitting a strategy two weeks before it would have worked. Budget your energy across months rather than days, track which sectors respond to you, and adjust your targeting based on where you get replies instead of where you wish you got them. Our post on the average job search length covers how to build that timeline.

It also helps to keep applying while you wait. In a market with record job counts, openings keep appearing. The applicant who is still in motion in month three is the one who catches them.
